The Dosha Types

Are there “pure” dosha types?

It is very rare that a person lives exactly one Dosha. Most people show two or even three doshas in their way of living. Therefore, Ayurveda also knows the mixed types:

  • Vata
  • Pitta
  • Kapha
  • Vata Pitta
  • Pitta Kapha
  • Vata Kapha
  • Vata Pitta Kapha

No type is worse than another. Each has its own strengths and weaknesses. Who knows his or her strengths and weaknesses can balance a lot with the right diet and a conscious handling of his or her characteristics.

The Three Main Types

The Vata Type

ayurveda vataThe Vata type expresses the quality of “moving” or of “enthusiasm”. His elements are space and air.

People with this quality can be easily animated. But they are easily overstimulated. Their spirit is restless and their memory not very exact. They are very fond of sports and arts. Sometimes Vata people are excessive in their entertainments. For them it is good to have a regular daily routine and time for the necessary relaxation.

If the Vata is in balance, it is expressed in a good mood and mental balance: spontaneous, awake and flexible.

The Pitta Type

ayurveda pittaThe Pitta type has the quality of “heating up” or “burning”. His element is fire.

These people are often intelligent and accurate with what they do. But also easily provoked. They transpire quickly and do not like high temperatures or sun. A firm, affectionate and safe relationship is important for them.

If the Pitta dosha is in balance, it is expressed in calm and satisfaction. High energy level.

The Kapha Type

ayurveda kaphaThe Kapha type has the quality of “phlegm” and “cohesion”. His elements are water and earth.

Kapha types are strong, content and soft. As stable personalities they show much patience. If they get angry, however, they are hard to stop. Honour counts more than lies for them. They need other people who motivate them, otherwise their missing speed may become laziness.

If the Kapha dosha is in balance, it expresses itself in physical strength, sympathy, indulgence, courage.
