Cosmic symbols in Vastu: where do they come from?

Vastu is based on symbols and signs of space. Nowadays the rules of geometry seem to be only theory. But in Vastu they have a mystical dimension. Geometry reveals higher reality.

holy symbol: the Swastika
Swastika: symbol of "Four". Symbolizes peace and harmony, Lord Ganesh has it on his right hand.

Wise men in ancient times described the cosmic forces with symbols and diagramms. Symbols were secret signs of a higher reality. The origins of Vastu are symbols and the four elements. Healthy living means combining these elements harmoniously.

Charts and symbols

The basic shape is the square. According to Vastu it's the ideal shape for a house. Because its energy field is balanced to all directions and this harmony is the key to  a good life. There are only few square buildings (mostly sacred buildings) - but this form is used to measure any individual house with the basic principles.

Why is the square so important?

The visible universe seems to have no border. Our ancestors knew one border: the horizon separates heaven and earth. Life on earth must be orientated on the cosmic harmony. Life ist stabilized through the for directions and cardinal points of Surya (the sun): East, South, West, North.

Four: number of stability

Surya, the solar deity
Surya is the chief solar deity, one of the Adityas

The number "Four" is the extension of the 'Two'. And it is the trinity added by one: that means, the Holy Trinity plus the origin of all. Four is

  • the combination of two dualisms/ poles (for instance, Yin - Yang, heaven - earth)
  • the 'idea' of a stable surface, and this idea leads to the square
  • a harmonious number, thats why the number of stability
  • the symbol of cosmic harmony - remember the four directions and the elements

Sacred geometry

So the four is a sacred number. Here is the origin of sacred geometry. And that's why Vastu is based on symbols. And the 'real', that means, the 'materialized' Four is the square.

The square represents the earth. How? Because sunrise and sunset, north (midnight) and south (noon) divide the time on earth and bound our world. The square unites these prime opposites.

Direction and space are very important in Vastu.
