House-Help: Removing Chewing Gum

While in the mouth chewing gums are no problem. If it sticks on pieces of furniture, clothes, or carpets, however, chewing gum is very hard to remove.

Families with many children can tell about this.

How to remove chewing gum from carpets or clothes

With the following tips I have made quite good experiences.

Remove the chewing gum with a hairdrier

[adsense:300x250:1:1]

Take a hairdrier and heat up the sticky chewing gum for about one minute.

With plastic materials leave a distance of approx. 15 cm.

Now remove the hot chewing gum with a spoon. Don´t take your fingers because the gum will stick to your hands.
Heat up the residues of the chewing gum once more for one minute. Now scrape off the softened residues again.
Now rub the part with a heat cream, e.g. rheumatism cream. This dissolves the bonding between gum and fibres. Again heat up the spot with a hair drier and take off the residues with the spoon.

Removing the Chewing Gum with ice

Sometimes the ice-method works. However, this method is not as thorough as the previous one. To remove the chewing gum, cool the stain with an ice cube until it becomes brittle. Afterwards take the pieces off quickly.

A tip I have not yet tried out: WD-40. This is a spray which is normally used to dissolve rust. When sprayed on the chewing gum it is said to dissolve it. However, I would not spray it on clothes, because I do not know if the stains of the spray can be removed.
