HOW To understand Vastu Shastra
Seven Colums of Vastu Shastra
Vastu Shastra works with the following elements for furnishing a house. Healthy living means combining these elements harmoniously.
- Five elements - fire, earth, water, air, aether. The five elements are useful when choosing the rooms and their use as well as furnishing them. And - they are easy to understand. There's no need to study mysticism for some years :) - Nevertheless, this may be helpful in some cases. But to start, simply ask yourself: how does me feeling change when I enter the room? If you are uncertain, which element is too strong or weak, ask your friend or neighbour.
- Four directions - north, east, south and west. The directions are important for the position of the furniture. Keep in mind: furniture is like a bone in a skeleton - a bone (furniture) on the wrong place destroys the harmony of your home.
Other important elements for furnishing your home:
- The magnetism of the earth and its electomagnetic energy grid.
- The energy grids are decisive for the position of the furniture in your home.
- The three Gunas - Tama, Sattva, Raja. The Gunas are important for the location of the rooms in your home.
- The three Doshas - Vata, Pitta, Kapha. The Doshas correspond with the five elements and are important for choosing the rooms in your home.
- The planets - Sun, Moon, Venus, Mercury, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Earth. The rooms in your house or apartment are assigned to the planets. The planets also determine the colours of the rooms in the house.
- The God Vastu Purusha - who lives in every house. Some illustrations show the god lying and facing the earth. Purusha represents the soul, resp. is translated and interpreted as soul.
Thus, pay attention when furnishing your home and do not place heavy furniture on Purusha’s heart or head.
Vastu Shastra and the cosmic drama
In Hinduism, Purusha (what's translated with "Cosmic Man") is the "self" which pervades the universe and keeps it alive. As it's told in the Rigvedic Purusha sukta, the devas fighted against and finally dismembered Purusha. Keep in mind that there are interesting similarities in the Osiris-Seth myth in ancient Egypt.
Slain Purusha got help form the cosmic lords. Purusha's breath is the wind, his mind is the Moon, and the eyes are the Sun. Tradition knows him as a primeval giant.
