Here is how to design and furnish your kitchen according to the rules of Vaastu Shastra.

In India special attention is paid to the preparation of food. Food influences our whole life. Food influences our thinking, our physical well-being and our moods. The place for the preparation of food influences the cooking result. Therefore, pay attention to a harmonic kitchen arrangement.  

The location of the kitchen in your house

The south, east or southeast is suitable for the location of the kitchen in your house. These directions are dominated by Raja, the fire. Fire is assigned to the planet Mars.

The colours in the kitchen

In the Vaastu Shastra the kitchen is assigned to the fire. So, for the kitchen red colours are suitable for the walls.

The furniture and appliances in the kitchen

For the position of the furniture in your kitchen the directions are important.

• The north - best place for the sink, washing machine should be placed in the north or the north-east corner.
• The east; the direction ruled by Agni, the god of fire. Best choice is to use the east-wall for the cooker.
• The south - possible for cooker, cupboards, fridge or the storeroom.
• The west - cupboards, fridge for keeping raw commodities, utensils etc are best placed on the west or south side.
• Middle - the middle of the kitchen is best for the dining table. So the result of all kitchenwork is in the centre. The aim of preparing rich in nutrients and tasty food is the joint meal. The dining table in the centre collects and units the energies.

How to practice?

In many flats and houses these Vastu advices can't be followed exactly. Maybe there is no place and/ or no money to renovate the whole kitchen, power points are limited etc. What can you do?

The most important step is to place the dining table in the middle of the kitchen. Second, to arrange the furniture (cupboards, shelves).
