House-Help: Window Cleaning
![]() |
There are many cleaning agents in the shelves of the supermarkets which promise clean windows fast and simple.
However, there are also other possibilities to get the windows clean and shining.
Old household remedies to clean the windows
My grandmother used a simple trick to get brilliant windows: she rubbed them with cold, black tea.
Stripes and streaks disappeared after drying and the windows were shiny again.
A well-known nuisance: a little inattentiveness and a ladder is in the tights!
I don´t throw away damaged tights. They are excellent for polishing the window panes. This saves some expensive microfibre cloth.
Many know the good old housewife's trick to clean the window panes with hot spirit water and newspaper. However, this is not so easy nowadays. Due to the motor traffic windows are greasy.
But simple washing-up liquid with a shot of spirit and some vinegar is a good window cleaning agent.
Attention: Never clean your windows if the sun shines on them.
They will get a bluish light and streaks.
Some tips for the wintertime: Window panes do not steam up any more if you rub them off with spirit to which some glycerine was added.
And the window frames?
Obviously the frame also belongs to the window. Wooden frames needs more care to last long.
I clean the wooden frames of my windows with a soap sud. After drying I wax them with simple furniture wax which is available in the do-it-your-self store.
My neighbour has the following tip for plastic window frames:
She mixes precipitate chalk with water to a pulp. Wipe the frames with this pulp and clean them afterwards with clear water.
